Introduction
In this Vilcanota range you can hike at a heights above 5000m and have fabulous panoramic views at crystalline lakes and nearby mountains. This hike is quite a long and difficult one (you walk 7-8 hours a day), so we recommend preparing well, doing shorter walks at altitude during 3 days around Cusco, before starting the hike.
1st Day
Around 7 am we will leave Cusco to get to the village of Tinqui at 3800m. (6 hour ride). On the way we pass through beautiful landscapes and several traditional villages including Urcos, Cattca and Ocongate. At Tinqui we will have our lunch while the guides are getting our luggage ready on the mules. After lunch we will start hiking for about 5 hours to the hot springs in Upis (4200m.). On the way we can enjoy the beautiful Cordillera Vilcanota. In the Upis valley we can see the very traditional lifestyle of the Quechua speaking population.
2nd Day
After breakfast we will walk toward the Upis pass at a height of 4850m. Over here there is hot springs and you can enjoy the amazing view of Ausangate. After continue hiking you will also have an amazing view over the green lake of Pukacocha and the turquoise lake Jatun Pukacocha. At this lake we will set up our campsite and spend the night.
3th Day
In the morning we walk up to the pass of Apuchata at 4900 mtr. After passing this pass we will hike uphill to the Palomani pass at the amazing altitude of 5200m. Surrounded by llamas and alpacas, we walk down from the pass towards Finaya Pampa, where we will set up our camp.
4th Day
We will continue our hike walking up the valley of Rio Q'ampa. From this valley we have a great view of the snow-covered peaks of Tres Picos and Puca Punta. From the small community of Q'ampa and onwards to the pass of Q'ampa we have good chances to see the small vicuñas famed for their valuable fleece. After making a small "hito" at the pass we walk down to the turquoise lake of Q'omercocha (4580masl), where we set up our camp.
5th Day
This morning we will take it easy and enjoy the view while having breakfast. After having breakfast we will start our hike to the village of Pacchanta . On the way we have time to look at the small settlements along the way and to watch the long tailed viscachas - family of the rabbits. After lunch we will go to the hot thermal springs to relax our muscles and after that we will start hiking to the village of Tinqui (3 hours). At Tinqui our vehicle will bring us back to Cusco, where we arrive in the late afternoon.
