Location:
The most important advantage of Muyana is the strategic location.Muyana is located in the Yanayacu river banks at 140 kms. (84 miles) southeast from Iquitos city, the capital of the Peruvian department of Loreto, very close to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, with its 2’080,000 hectares, it is the biggest in Peru.In our fast boats, the trip takes about 3 hours. From Iquitos, we sailed upstream through areas of unexplored primary rainforest in comparison to the now sadly exploited secondary forest which is downstream from Iquitos. Thanks to the remoteness of the lodge, in Muyuna we GUARANTEE observation of birds, monkeys, sloth, dolphins, fish, etc. in their natural habitat.
Muyuna shows the world a sustainable approach to responsible tourism. Many travelers have been left trapped by Muyuna legend, returning more than once.
Muyuna is located in the Yanayacu River that means “black water” (in Quechua—Inca’s language), because of the darkness given by the minerals that it brings from the highlands. Take note that there are several rivers with the same name. The ten lakes that are around Muyuna also have black water, making easier the fishing and a bird watching excursion, as it is the food base for the ecological chain.
Being located in a small tributary of the Amazon, where there is only one entry, there is no presence of fishing boats, or lumber, not many tourists (mostly only going to MUYUNA). The place is intimate and solitary, surrounded only by nature.

The Lodge:
Muyuna was designed and built by people from the community of San Juan keeping strict relation to the architecture. Since the level of the Amazon and its tributaries can vary a few feet, is constructed on stilts. The rooms are fresh and are hermetically protected-mesh screens on the windows and roof. There is a large dining room for socializing and hammocks to enjoy the leisure time. Muyuna Lodge is a small and intimate lodge.Distribution is done according to what the customer needs (single bungalows, double or matrimonial bungalows, family bungalows, etc.). In addition, each cottage has a full ensuite and modern bathroom. All rooms have a terrace with hammock overlooking the forest or the river where you can see, for example, dolphins swimming in flood season. You can be pleased by colorful sunsets and by the deafening silence of the rainforest at night.
The lamps give a magical touch to the tropical night, as there is no electricity in the lodge. The hallways are also lit. Due to the low population density in the area, there are no antennas, therefore, no cell signals. We are in constant communication with Iquitos office by radio. In the afternoon, using a small generator, we can charge the batteries of cameras and lap tops.
Muyuna employs residents of San Juan de Yanayacu, besides having strong ties to the community; giving a much-needed financial support. Muyuna and their activities are done in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The residents grew by having the forest as their habitat, not fashion, electricity, Internet or luxuries. When we visit the village, our intention is not to change their habits, so when during the excursions, you go to the village, the visit is very spontaneous without a touristy show.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time of the year to visit Muyuna?
MUYUNA can be visited all year round. The landscapes only change. Each season has its charm: When the area is draining, you can walk a lot and there are fewer mosquitoes. When the water is high, what we walked, we use canoes to the height of a little less than the treetops, and then you can see more flowers.
Why Muyuna guarantees to see free animals and the others lodge don´t?
Being located far away from Iquitos and Iquitos-Nauta highway and working hand in hand with the people of San Juan de Yanayacu, we are preserving the area and is easy to see animals.
What is the most dangerous thing that can happen?
The bite of a snake. For this reason, as Muyuna is located in an area surrounded by animals, we recommend using rubber boots. For eleven years, no passenger has ever suffered a bite. If that were to happen, we have antivenom and boats to make the transfer to Iquitos immediately.
Are they really needed the rubber boots? Does Muyuna supply them?
Yes, you really need them, because there are parts of the walks where the mud buries the entire foot and give us greater security and protection. Muyuna is not a shoe store where we have all sizes for travelers who join us at the same time. In Iquitos it is cheaper to buy or rent.
How safe is Muyuna and its programs?
We have expert guides who know how to act if they were to present contingencies. They also know how to navigate the jungle, if lost. It has only happened once, but found within hours. In Muyuna two guards work at night, if people are afraid.
What animals do you guarantee to see 100%?
Sloths, 4 or 5 species of monkeys, hundreds of birds, alligators, gray and pink dolphins, piranhas, dragonflies, mosquitoes, among others.
Do I need vaccinations? How is the topic of disease?
In the area where Muyuna is located there is not malaria or dengue. So far, we have not had any reports of someone who´s been at Muyuna area previously had these diseases. However, it is common for travelers to have stomach problems. Beware, we recommend not eating in unhygienic places. In Muyuna we have gentle medicine to cure these ills. When it´s complicated, we take the passenger to Iquitos at no extra cost.
What days we leave for the Muyuna?
Every day of the year, we depart to the lodge at 9:30 am (Monday to Sunday).
How is it different Muyuna, from other lodges?
Other lodges situated, for been located downstream and near Iquitos, cannot see free animals; they go to visit Monkey Island and snake pits to see animals in captivity. Also make tourist visits to tribes, shamans and homemade factories where distilled liquor is produced. Muyuna lead excursions to observe animals in their natural habitat.
Why Muyuna doesn’t have a swimming pool?
Although many of our competitors have a swimming pool, we decided not to make one, because we don’t want to use chlorine and chemicals for its maintenance.
