Programma Reed boat tour
After meeting your guide at the hotel in the morning, we drive 1,5 hours to the village of Huatajata, on the shores of Lake Titicaca.
A motorboat is waiting us, to take us to the island of Suriki, a 30 minutes journey.
Suriki is one of the few places left, where the art of reed-boat construction is kept alive. Partly thanks to Topas' involvement and volition to maintain this knowledge alive through tourism.
Once on the island, we meet the family who build the reed boats, and they will give us a brief summary of the reed-boat history and making.
We then dress for the real adventure, and launch the reedboats into their element.
A reed boat will last for app. one year after first launch. This is due to the fact that the reeds absorb huge quantity of water, which starts a decomposition process. After absorbing water, the reed boat weighs 150 kg, and turns extremely stabile and safe to navigate in.
According to your wishes, we spend some hours navigating the waters around Suriki, usually escorted by birds such as variuos species of ducks, gulls and grebes.
Lunchbox is served on the beach, enjoying the views of the "Royal Mountainrange", where peaks as Huayna Potosí, Illampu and Illimani reach over 6.000 meters.
The reed boat is easy to control, and requires no special training or previous experience.
In the afternoon, we return the launch site, and travel to the mainland by motorboat. From Huatajata back to La Paz by private transportation.
Approaching La Paz in the late afternoon, gives you an imposing experience of wild mountains and civilization coming together
