Our 6 Day  Ausangate Roundtrip Expedition Program

Introduction

In this Vilcanota range you can hike at a heights above 5000m and have fabulous panoramic views at crystalline lakes and nearby mountains. This hike is quite a long and difficult one (you walk 7-8 hours a day), so we recommend preparing well, doing shorter walks at altitude during 3 days around Cusco, before starting the hike.

1st Day

We leave Cusco at about 7 AM  in the morning after a light breakfast. We take a private bus to the village of Tinqui at 3800 mtr.and takes about 6 h . On the way we pass through beautiful landscapes and several traditional villages including Urcos, Cattca and Ocongate. We take our lunch in Tinqui while our luggage is being arranged on the mules. We take of after lunch, going towards the hot springs in Upis (4200masl), in total about 5 hours walking. On the way we can enjoy the beautiful Cordillera Vilcanota, and Ausangate Mountain is coming closer. In the Upis valley we can see the very traditional lifestyle of the Quechua speaking population, and in the wet ground of the valley we find bird life like ibis and Andean goose.

2nd Day

After a solid breakfast we start the walk towards the first pass, the Upis pass at  4850 mtr ,with hot spring , where the view of Ausangate is amazing. From here we have a quite hard descent coursed by the thick layer of gravel on the trail. Soon we will be on the side of the mountain and a new view appear, the green lake of Pukacocha , later we reach the turquoise lake Jatun Pukacocha. We set up our camp by the lake. From the campsite we will make the climb up to see the lake

3th Day

In the morning we walk up to the second pass of Apuchata  at 4900 mtr. with the turquoise Laguna Ausangate Cocha below a lot of fish lives in the cold water of this lake. Passing the lake we have a short but steep ascend to the Palomani pass at the amazing altitude of 5200mtr. Surrounded by flocks of llamas and alpacas, we walk down from the pass towards the settlement of Finaya Pampa, where we will set up our camp.

4th Day

We cross green swampy areas in the valley of Finaya Pampa and later we start walking up the valley of Rio Q'ampa. From the valley we have a great view of the snow-covered peaks of Tres Picos and Puca Punta. From the small community of Q'ampa and onwards to the pass of  the same name in 5000 m We have good chances to see the small vicuñas famed for their valuable fleece. After making a small “hito” at the pass we walk down to the turquoise lake of Q'omercocha (4580masl), where we set up  our camp.

5th Day

We take it easy in the morning enjoying the view while having breakfast. Then we start our short day walk to the village of Pacchanta . On the way we have time to look at the small settlements along the way and to watch the long tailed viscachas – family of the rabbits. After lunch we will go to the hot thermal springs to relax the tired muscles and in the late afternoon there is a good chance to see an Andean village.

6th Day

We leave our last campsite at the village of Pacchanta walking about 3 hours back to the village of Tinqui. Here our transport back to Cusco wait for us, where we arrive in the late afternoon.
